MT: “The Joy of Less” by Francine Jay - life changing!

How did you get started on your career path? KB: I think I was the only Freshman that attended the University of Delaware Career Fair. Everyone was looking for graduating seniors but I was ready to get some experience! This is where I scored my first inside sales internship. I gained some great sales and customer service experience but I was more intrigued by my Operations Management classes and wanted to explore that route. I started interning with bloom’s sister company as an Operations Intern and the rest is history! This is where I met Michelle and bloom was born. We had the opportunity to be intrapreneurs within the company and create our dream jobs. It all started with a mission to help women live more fulfilling lives and this is something we will always stand behind.

MT: My original plan was to be the editor of a NY based magazine (think Jennifer Garner in “13 going on 30.”) I was interviewing in New York and was about to make the move, when my Delaware based internship (bloom’s parent company) offered me a full time position. There wasn’t a specific role for me, but they wanted me to stay. I was torn, but I realized that if I stayed, I had the unique opportunity not to find, but to create my dream job. Shortly after, Kaylyn and I created bloom, almost as an experiment, and 7 crazy years later we’re bigger than either of us could have ever imagined!

What key elements played into your success? KB: I have always been a go getter. I am proactive, organized, efficient and persistent. I truly love my job and look forward to it every day. Bloom has helped me bloom into the best version of myself and I am so grateful for that. Staying focused on our mission to positively affect women’s lives has made all the difference for us. We are so lucky to have this amazing platform to bring like-minded women together to motivate and support one another. We feed off of ideas and critiques from our bloom girl community and that has always been at the heart of our business.

MT: The idea of “INtrepreneurship.” We define that as being entrepreneurial, even if you’re not the boss. This mentality allowed Kaylyn and I to create bloom and grow it into what it is, and it’s something we try to instill in all of our team members. We want everyone to feel like bloom is THEIR baby, too. We encourage everyone to share new ideas, be creative and empower them make their own decisions that align with our shared goals and visions vs. wait to be told exactly what to do and how to do it. It’s much more fun and much more productive this way!

What struggles did you face getting to this point? Oh the growing pains! We were not always just “bloom”. Our focus used to be on our sister company so we have built bloom from the ground up! It’s amazing to see how far we have come and looking back at the bumps along the way. Luckily we can see the valuable lesson now but it wasn’t a smooth road. We have faced many rejections, let downs, factory dilemmas, and operational growing pains over the years. We remained focused on our vision, worked our butts off and now realize everything happens for a reason. In the end all of these struggles have led us to where we are today, and we couldn’t be happier with that. Upon reflection, all struggles do have a silver lining if you look hard enough.

Who was the biggest influence in your professional life? KB: I have to say Michelle. She is the true definition of a girl boss. She inspires me every day in our work and personal lives. She is so creative and hardworking. I don’t know anyone else that works at her pace, she challenges me to keep up! She really helps push me in all the right ways. We are a great team because we have a variety of different strengths to complement one another and help bloom grow!

MT: Kaylyn is my right hand gal and the best partner I could ever ask for! She is so poised, put together, intelligent and organized and I look up to her in so many ways. She’s the yin to my yang business wise, and she’s strong where I’m lacking. We balance each other out well, all the while keeping things fun and a little weird. We’ve truly grown up together the past 8 years and I feel so lucky I get to work with such an amazing friend.

When do you feel most successful?: KB: There is no better feeling than having a super productive day. I love tackling all my to do’s and feeling so efficient. Whether it’s coming out of our social media meeting inspired and ready to tackle my day or attending a trade show and making great new connections! Every week we share positive feedback from our bloom girl community and this gives me the most pride in what we have created. Knowing that we are making a positive effect on the world defines our success.

MT: I feel most successful when making others happy. When a customer tells us how a product we created has changed their life, when a store partner is thrilled with our products’ sales, and seeing our team’s excitement when they set and achieve big goals for themselves are some of my favorite moments!

What’s the best piece of advice you received? KB: Our mentor has always reiterated a special quote from Zig Ziglar. “You can have whatever you want in life if you simply help enough other people get what they want”. From day one we have been customer focused, pouring our hearts into our products and sharing our hearts with the people we meet. Our mission is to help others in this world and that has been an invaluable life lesson.

MT: Be where your feet are. Life is very busy and there is so much pressure on women these days to have and do it all. We need to accept that there will ALWAYS be more to do, and there will ALWAYS be an area of your life that you feel is “lacking.” If everything at work is going well, there is probably a pile of laundry at home. If you’re spending a lot of time with friends and family, you probably behind on your gym routine. Strive for balance, but don’t let it stress you out and take you out of the moment that you’re in. Embrace that there will always be items on your to-do list, and make sure to lighten up, relax and have some fun in the meantime!

What advice would you give to women looking to enter your industry/space? KB: Lead with your heart. Stay focused on your vision and don’t give up. Trust the process because everything happens for a reason.

MT: Think about what makes your brand different. Anyone can put cute designs on paper, but they can’t copy your heart and your brand if your products are truly unique. Identify what makes you, your products and your message different and double down on that to stand out from the competition.

What accomplishment are you most proud of? KB: The birth of bloom and our product “babies” of course! It’s pretty surreal that 8 years have flown by and we have created and nurtured such an impactful business and brand. I couldn’t be more proud of how far we have come and the team that has helped us get there. I am so incredibly grateful for this journey.

MT: Our Vision Planners and Wedding Planners are particularly close to my heart. These are two of our most thoughtful, guided planning items. We truly poured our hearts into these products to make them as thorough and detailed as possible. It is so rewarding knowing that we can take our life experiences and use them to create products that make other’s experiences navigating the same situation easier, more manageable, and fun!
